Each year on April 16th, voice health professionals worldwide join together to celebrate World Voice Day.
World Voice Day encourages men and women, young and old, to assess their vocal health and take action to improve or maintain good voice habits. The American Academy of Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery has sponsored the U.S. observance of World Voice Day since its inception in 2002.
This year, the Voice Foundation will host three events in Philadelphia in honor of World Voice Day.
Philadelphia public school children
will enjoy a morning program featuring nationally renowned storyteller Linda
Goss, along with Drexel University
physicians, speech-language pathologists, and singing voice specialists. The
panel will encourage schoolchildren to discover their own voices and explore
vocal health and care. Approximately 300 children, grades third through fifth,
will attend the event at the Philadelphia Free Public Library Auditorium (1901 Vine Street, Philadelphia,
PA 19103) from 10 – 11 a.m. on World Voice Day, April 16.
Donna
Snow, head of Temple University’s
Acting Department, will conduct a vocal health workshop for actors at Rittenhouse
Square Fitness Club (2002 Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia, PA 19103)
from 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. on
April 16. The program will develop actors’ voices through Fitzmaurice Voicework,
a comprehensive approach to voice training that can include work on breathing,
resonance, speech, dialects, impromptu speaking, text, singing, and voice with
movement. Participation in the workshop is free but space is very limited;
please RSVP to (215) 735-7999. World-renowned laryngologist and Voice Foundation chairman Robert T. Sataloff, MD, DMA, FACS will give a talk on "Vocal Health: What Goes Wrong and How to Fix It" at Drexel University College of Medicine from 12 - 2 p.m. (New College Building, 1st Floor, Geary Auditorium A, 245 N. 15th St., Philadelphia, PA 19102). All are welcome to attend this free presentation.
World Voice Day events will wrap up with a panel discussion, “The Woman’s Voice in Business and Politics,” at
the World Café Live (3025 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104)
from 5 – 7 p.m. Female leaders from
Philadelphia’s medical, political, business, and non-profit arenas will gather
to discuss the role of the professional woman’s voice. The forum will include
analysis of current public speakers, a specialist physician’s perspective on
how to keep your voice healthy, public speaking tips and tricks from a
presentation coach, and an interdisciplinary panel discussion and question and
answer session with voice experts. The evening program is free and open to the public, and will conclude with a networking
opportunity over light hors d’oeuvres.
